Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has set up an investigation into ways of tightening gun-control laws.

Nhleko said that of particular concern was firearms ostensibly obtained for sporting purposes.

"There are people who acquire firearms and firearm licences on the basis that they are part of a sporting category. One of the loopholes [in the act] is that [there is no] threshold when it comes to that.

"You find one individual with almost 5000 firearms and licences for sporting purposes. We need to find a way to address this," he said.

Another weakness in the current legislation is lax control of the amount of ammunition gun owners can purchase.

To be honest, I think it is a loophole. However, I also think that once you find a person to be competent, there should be no limits to the number of guns he/she could own.

This is complete and utter BS! Firearm owners are the most law abiding section of our population and sport shooters are even more so because we not only have to adhere to the FCA but also our various sporting associations and shooting ranges!

As Dedicated Sport Shooters we are far more fit and proper firearm owners, better trained and by far better equipped than any SAPS or SANDF member. Believe me, I have been involved with training for some of the more specialised groups and their gun handling and weapon safety was, to put it politely... very lacking!

I am truly sick and tired of having this kind of drivel thrown at myself and people like myself when in actual fact it is Government agencies like SAPS and SANDF who have lost, had stolen, or in some cases sold, more arms and ammunition than any of the DSS gun owners in SA could hope to licence or afford!
